Day 4 – St. Louis, MO to Mt. Vernon, IL - 74 miles
To begin our day we cross the historic Mississippi River. Just a few miles north of the Gateway Arch the Lewis and Clark Voyage of Discovery entered the mouth of the Missouri River in 1804. Just a few miles east of St. Louis we pass the site of the Native American village of Cahokia [A.D. 800-1400]. Our destination city, Mt. Vernon, dates “back to 1817 when Zadok Casey, a Methodist preacher and farmer, settled in the area to be known as Jefferson County.” There are presently 6 United Methodist churches in Mt. Vernon.
