Wilke Event, Planning Meeting…October 23, 2007

( have sent this copied and as an attachment to be sure you get it)

Present:  Neva Merriman, Sue Morgan, Jerry Niebaum, Judy Niebaum, Tom Brady, Margo Gordon

Our next meeting will be Monday evening, November 12, at 6:00.  Let me know whether this date will work for you.  Those who wanted to be at this meeting and couldn’t make it, please come to this one.

What we will suggest to Bishop Wilke:

            1.  For sermon time concentrate on how Christians should respond to the “scripture” given that concepts of sexuality have changed as well as concepts of biblical interpretation; how does biblical interpretation, both literal and historical/critical, impact the church.  Deal with the question of sin.  Ask the Bishop to mention our survey in his remarks. We like what he says on the Conference DVD.

            2.  We decided that this occasion was not the time to deal with denominational problems.

            3.  For the seminar time, we think we would like to give people a chance to respond to the sermon and ask questions.  We thought it would be good to hand out cards at the beginning of the seminar and have a process for questions.   An alternative would be to have a place for questions on the survey that we are going to design. Do both?  We would have some questions prepared by us as well.

Tom will find out about an appropriate honorarium.

Tom will take care of hosting Bishop Wilke on that Sunday morning.

Tom: Please remind Bishop Wilke that he said he would have someone send his bio.

The survey:

            1.  We will insert a survey in the bulletin, encouraging listeners to fill it out after the sermon.

            2.  Margo, Neva, Sue, and Judy will work on designing a survey.

            3.  Keep it simple with a scale to mark

            4.  Provide a place for remarks or questions for Wilke or for RH’s.

            5.  Jerry consented to process and summarize our surveys.

The meal:

            1.  Jerry Niebaum will contact Tami to ask if the youth group is interested in doing the Meal on Jan. 20 as a fundraiser.  Youth might sell tickets which would help us promote the event. If youth cannot do this, Jerry will contact Maceli’s to see how much it would cost to have the meal catered. Sue will contact Dana Goble to find out if we need any finance approval concerning taking a collection or collecting a fee for the meal.

            2.  We will need to have a deadline for signing up for the meal.

Advertising:

            1.  We will talk more about advertising at our next meeting

            2.  We do believe that we need to go to all small groups in the church to promote it; will need people to volunteer to do this.

            3.  We need to develop talking points for visiting groups. Carol has the list of groups.

            4.  We will use all of the usual forms of advertising as well.

            5.  Jerry is going to think about a connecting webpage to the church site, for Reconciling Hearts.

            6.  We discussed the fact that the Administrative Board statement from August has not yet appeared in print.  It was suggested that our whole Wilke event could be promoted as RH’s proceeding as supported by AB in its                             educative role.

Hospitality:  Margaret corrected the mileage for Bishop Wilke.  He will have to travel 192 miles to Lawrence plus another 30-40 into KC where he is staying.
