Background: The Sesquicentennial Committee of 2004 wanted to share with the congregation some of the recorded musical legacy of our church. For more than 3 decades one of our choir members, Robert Vaughan, has professionally recorded some of our special musical presentations. From his tape library we were able to create an audio CD of some of these, which is still available for purchase. The following is taken from the CD insert.
CD liner notes
Since it was established in 1854, First United Methodist Church has evolved a rich musical history along with its spiritual influence in our community. From the pealing of the tower bell to sonorous anthems and joyous congregational singing, its music fills us. This CD reflects just a few memorable musical occasio9ns during past years. Not all eras could be represented; alas, many events were never recorded. However, securing a quality recording has been a priority from time to time. Church member, Robert Vaughan, has willingly set up his equipment to produce good recordings; consequently, we have some samples for posterity.
Represented on this recording are the efforts of FUMC musical staff from the 1980's forward. Rob Reid served as musical director during two time periods: 1984-86 and 1993-01. Joel Panciera directed from 1990-93. John Paul Johnson has conducted from 2002 to the present time [2004]. Matt Vaughan grew up in the church and shared his musical skills with us as well. Dan Abrahamson has been our church organist since 1963. The number of voice and bell choirs has varied over the years depending on budget and current musical directorship.
The FUMC Mid-Morning Worship Team supplies special music and accompaniment for the 9:45 a.m. service, using lead singers, guitar, bass, percussion, and piano. CD tracks 7 and 12 reflect the style of music from this service.
When an orchestra is needed, music directors pay a stipend to KU students and community musicians. Generally speaking, Dan Abrahamson provides most of the other accompaniments on piano or organ. The vocal choirs and bell choirs provide music for the 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services.
Bell choir leadership has come from the music director with some exceptions. For a few years a bell choir of special adults, who are Cottonwood clients, was directed by Becky Dinkins. At times, there was a children's bell choir and an advanced youth bell choir. In 2003, the Celebration Ringers were invited to perform at KU Vespers under the baton of John Paul Johnson. The Nutcracker, track 16, which was recorded at Lied Center, has become a tradition at FUMC.
The Reuter Organ at FUMC (4m / 122r) is a large and versatile instrument that has been maintained and augmented by Dan Abrahamson over the years. The present organ built in 1938 replaced an organ built in 1904, which was the first pipe organ for our congregation. On this CD you can hear the organ as both solo and accompaniment. The Stars and Stripes Forever is a July 4th congregational favorite and is an example of our organs magnificence.
A variety of musical styles and consistently high quality musical leadership have helped to make worship at FUMC an exciting experience. Please enjoy these samplings of fine listening, performing, and singing that we are blessed to enjoy at First United Methodist Church, Lawrence
